Britam Money Market Fund is one of the top unit trusts in Kenya. The fund’s consistent and competitive returns over the years as compared to peers has won the hearts of many.
Money Market Funds (MMFs) have now replaced the normal bank savings accounts. They have quietly become Kenya’s most popular retail investment product, offering real returns that beat standard bank savings.
Britam Money Market Fund is a unit trust that pools funds to invest in low-risk, short-term instruments like Treasury bills and fixed deposits. If you are looking for a long-term investment plan, I suggest you consider Britain Imarika Investment Plan (better rates and no withholding tax on returns)
I will provide a table of how the fund has performed throughout this year and I will be updating the return rate table in this page from now henceforth. However, before we reach to the table the fund performance over the years ranges from 9% to 15% net management fee and gross withholding tax. MMF Interest rates depend on Central Bank rate cycles.

Key Benefits and Why Britam MMF Stands Out
There are a host of reasons for you to invest in the Money Market.
- High Liquidity and Accessibility: Unlike bank fixed deposits, funds invested in the money market are very liquid and easily accessible. For example, you can invest your money in Britam MMF today and withdraw it in the next minute or tomorrow or any day of your choice. Your money is not locked and will earn interest for the days it has been with the manager. For small amounts, the withdrawal is instant. For higher amounts, it takes up to 24 hours to process. You can manage your investment fund easily 24/7 via the “My Britam App”, the web portal, or USSD *778#.
- Security: Britam MMF is regulated by the Capital Market Authority. The custodian of the money you invest with Britam is Standard Chartered Bank for safety keeping. To ensure your money is invested in the right and agreed assets, Britam MMF trustee is Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).
- Higher Interest Rates: Out of the strongest money market fund managers in the Kenya market, Britam is always at the top consistently. Their unit trusts including MMF, Bond, Balanced Fund, Equity Fund, and Fixed Deposit are top performers. Don’t take my word for it, you counter check this information by following the Business Daily newspaper.
Understanding Britam Money Market Fund Fees and Withdrawals
- Management Fee: This typically applies to all fund managers. Britam MMF charges a management fee of 2.5% of the fund value. When Britam announces or declares its MMF return rates, the rate is net management fee (the management fee is already factored out), but gross withholding tax. This is as per the requirements of CMA, and it is the standard guideline that any ethical fund manager should follow.
- 15% Withholding Tax. When you get the declared interest rate, you should go on and compute withholding tax of 15% of the returns you get. Withholding tax of 15% in interest earned is imposed by the government of Kenya.
- Britam MMF Withdrawal Policy: You are allowed to withdraw once per calendar month free of charge. Subsequent withdrawals are charged a constant, flat rate of KES 750.

Who Should Use MMF?
If you belong to the following categories of people, you are eligible to open a Britam MMF account.
- Investors building an emergency fund. If you are looking for a long-term investment of over 2 years, I would recommend you consider the Britam Imarika Investment Plan. The plan offers better returns not subject to withholding tax since it falls under the category of life insurance.
- Individuals saving for short-term goals (under one year) like school fees or a vacation. However, for building a school fees fund, I would recommend you consider education policies. An education fund needs guaranteed returns and life protection, such that your children will go to school whether you are there or not.
- Those looking to park excess cash securely while earning daily interest, for example Saccos.
