The Real Cost of Educating a Child in Kenya (2026): From Birth to University

What is the real cost of educating a child in Kenya? This is a question we shall close today by covering education costs at all stages/levels of education of a child here in Kenya. We shall also consider both CBE (Competency-Based Education) and IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) curriculum systems, and all types of schools, public, private, and international. And finally, I will give a way of saving for the future education of your children.

In 2025, the Kenya curriculum system moved from Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Competency-Based Education (CBE) and what that has done is to increase the cost of education. CBC was not cheap either and it saw a significant increase of school fees from the 8-4-4 system. Both the CBC and CBE create more levels of education with different structures that have made school fees worse. Some of those completely new levels are the senior and junior secondary schools, replacing the old 4-year secondary school level.

Understanding the Difference Between CBE and IGCSE in Kenya

CBE Education Structure in Kenya

The CBE curriculum system has the following structure/stages/levels, from the lowest to the highest level

  • Preschool (PP1 & PP2), takes 2 years to complete.
  • Primary School (Grade 1–6), takes 6 years to complete.
  • Junior Secondary (Grade 7–9), takes 3 years to complete.
  • Senior Secondary (Grade 10–12),.takes 3 years to complete.
  • University/TVET, typically takes 3 to 4 years to complete.

The CBE emphasizes practical skills, projects, and competency-based learning.

IGCSE Education Structure in Kenya

The British curriculum structure followed by international schools has the following stages/levels, starting with the lowest to the highest.

  • Kindergarten/Early Years (FS1 and FS2, takes 2 years to complete.
  • Primary School (Year 1-6), takes 6 years to complete.
  • Lower Secondary (Year 7-9), takes 3 years to complete.
  • O-Level (Year 10-11), takes 2 years to complete.
  • A-Level (Year 12-13), takes 2 years to complete
  • University Level, takes 3 years to complete

The IGCSE education system is internationally recognized and often prepares students for overseas universities.

Education is a basic need and it is the greatest gift you can give your children. You should not see it as an expense, but rather as a multi-decade financial project for improving your children’s well being now and in the future. Let’s begin and see those costs from birth to the university level. I will add the hidden costs of uniforms, meals, transport, activity fees, and learning materials to the average costs to avoid more complications in the computation.

Cost of Raising a Child in Kenya (Birth to Age 6)

The cost of raising a child starts at delivery. The hospital delivery fee, first vaccination and all that is around KES 40,000 to KES 250,000 depending whether it is a public or a private hospital/wing and so many other factors.

Then we jump fast forward to the daycare and nanny costs which range from KES 7,000 to KES 15,000.

In this phase, we also have pre-primary education (PP1, PP2 -CBE)/Kindergarten -IGCSE) costs. Real education starts to show including the hidden costs of school uniform, play-based learning materials, and the “first-interview” fees.

In PP1 and PP2 under CBE, public ECDE centers’ costs range from KES 5,000 to KES 20,000 annually.

In private CBE preschools, costs range from KES 30,000 to a mouth-dropping cost of KES 250,000 annually. This depends whether it is an affordable private preschool or a premium preschool.

The IGCSE kindergarten (FS1 and FS2) costs even more. The mid-tier international pre-school costs range from KES 250,000 to KES 600,000 annually.

Premium international schools will draw from your pockets a whopping KES 800,000 to KES 1,500,000 annually.

Up to here, you can see the big difference between IGCSE curriculum and CBE curriculum in terms of costs. IGCSE is considerably more expensive than CBC. The international staff, foreign learning materials, premium extracurricular activities, and the craving of “unique” carries a price.

Cost of Primary School Education in Kenya (Grade 1-6 for CBE and Year 1-6 for IGCSE)

Under the CBE curriculum, should we talk of free primary education? The curriculum has too many indirect costs, and again the government inefficiency of sending the capitation fund in time.

Public primary schools costs range from KES 5,000 to KES 20,000 annually for indirect expenses including uniforms, lunch programs, learning projects, exercise books, school trips and much more.

Free education does not mean zero costs. For poor families, this might be a burden.

Private CBE primary schools start from KES 50,000 to KES 600,000 plus annually. Private primary schools range from affordable, mid-tier to elite ones.

Many parents are opting for CBE private schools because of the government under-funding public schools leading to poor education performance.

Private primary schools offer computer lessons, extracurricular activities, swimming, school transport, and digital learning, widening the gap between private and public education.

IGCSE primary schools structure school fees differently. Mid-range IGCSE schools charge between KES 400,000 to KES 900,000 annually, while premium international schools charge between KES 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 annually.

The average Kenyan household income cannot afford this much school fees under IGCSE.

Cost of Junior Secondary Education in Kenya (CBE Grade 7–9)

The junior secondary introduced more practical expenses.

For public school, the average cost ranges from KES 20,000 to KES 40,000.

Additional elements that balloon the costs under this level include STEM projects, science materials, technology requirements, uniforms, and activity fees. Parents believe some of these elements have played a big role in increasing expenses at this level.

Private junior secondary schools costs range from KES 80,000 for the affordable ones to KES 700,000 annually for the elite schools.

Some of the elements that make the costs explode include labs and technology, school transport, extracurricular programs, and boarding options.

Cost of Lower Secondary Education in Kenya (IGCSE Year 7-9)

Under IGCSE, lower secondary education prepares students for the O-level.

The average costs in this level start from KES 600,000 to KES 1,500,000 annually, especially for med-range schools.

Premium schools start from KES 1,500,000 to around KES 2,500,000 annually.

Items that push costs this far include science lab fees, international learning materials, sports and arts programs, technology integration, and school trips.

Cost of Senior Secondary Education in Kenya (CBE Grade 10–12)

From junior secondary, the next level is senior secondary under the CBE curriculum.

For public boarding senior secondary schools, the average cost is around KES 50,000 to 75,000 annually.

Items that push these costs at this level include shopping lists, boarding items, pocket money, transport, and motivation fees.

For private senior secondary, costs range from KES 150,000 to KES 1,000,000 for elite schools.

Elements that push the costs to those levels include technology, specialized learning programs, boarding, and international exposure trips.

Cost of O-Level Education in Kenya (IGCSE Year 10-11)

In the IGCSE curriculum, the O-level prepares students for the A-level.

The average cost of educating a child at this level starts from KES 800,000 to KES  3,000,000 annually, especially in mid-tier and elite schools.

The elements that push costs at this level include international exam fees, science lab costs, technology, sports programs, boarding and accommodation. These items push costs to millions very fast.

Cost of A-Level Education in Kenya (IGCSE Year 12-13)

The IGCSE A-level focuses on university preparation and specialization.

Average costs at this level, driven by university application counseling, SAT/IELTS preparation, international trips, boarding and advanced science labs, range between KES 1,000,000 to KES 4,000,000.

A level is among the most expensive levels of education in Kenya.

Cost of University Education in Kenya

Under the CBE curriculum, the pathway to the university level is joining a public/private university or a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.

The average annual costs of university level starts from KES 100,000 to KES 600,000 depending whether it is a public or a private university and the course undertaken.

The main drivers for university education costs include accommodation, food, internet, transport, laptop expenses, and graduation fees.

However, for students admitted to public universities under the government sponsorship, the government support ranges from 30-70% depending on the family income. The balance is cleared by HELB which undertakes 25% and the student clears the remaining 5%, called the student share.

The New Higher Education Funding Model, introduced to replace the old block-funding system, is designed to prioritize students based on their actual financial need. Instead of every student getting the same flat rate from the government, the funding is now split into five bands determined by a “Means Testing Instrument” (MTI) managed by HELB.

Here is a simple breakdown of how these bands work and how the costs are shared between the government and the student. The household income is the basis of this funding model.

BandMonthly Household IncomeGov. ScholarshipHELB LoanParent/Family ShareStudent Upkeep (Loan)
Band 1Up to KES 5,99570%25%5%KES 60,000
Band 2KES 5,996 – 23,67060%30%10%KES 55,000
Band 3KES 23,671 – 70,00050%30%20%KES 50,000
Band 4KES 70,001 – 120,00040%30%30%KES 45,000
Band 5Above KES 120,00030%30%40%KES 40,000

An example:

If the tuition fees of a degree course costs KES 200,000 per year:

  • In Band 1, the parent pays only 5% (KES 10,000).
  • In Band 5, the parent pays 40% (KES 80,000).

Then HELB provides a separate Upkeep Loan KES 60,000 and KES 40,000 respectively, (sent directly to the student’s bank account) to cover food, books, and accommodation. As shown in the table above, the upkeep amount decreases as the family income increases. It is important that the HELB loan must be repaid with 4% interest after graduation.

So, if you attend a public university under government sponsorship, education costs will be significantly lower. However, at this stage, the best thing is to assume you will incur full education costs. Whether your children will be sponsored by the government or not is unknown.

Most students under the IGCSE system pursue foreign universities. If you are also pursuing foreign universities under the CBE system, these university level costs will also apply to you.

The average university level costs range between KES 1,500,000 to KES 6,000,000 annually, pushed by SAT/IELTS exams, international applications, visas, flights, accommodation abroad, and overseas tuition.

From the look of things, local universities are way cheaper whether private or public.

Under the CBE pathway, estimated lifetime education costs for:

  • Low-income families are between KES 2,000,000 to KES 5,000,000.
  • Middle-class families range from KES 6,000,000 to KES 15,000,000.
  • Upper-middle-class families are around KES 20,000,000 plus.

These costs accumulate across all education levels.

IGCSE Curriculum School Fees Table Summary

Under the IGCSE pathway, estimated lifetime education costs for:

  • Mid-tier international pathway range between KES 15,000,000 to KES 40,000,000.
  • Premium international and overseas university pathway are between KES 50,000,000 and 100,000,000 plus.

From those figures, there is a huge education costs gap between CBE and IGCSE curriculum.

The CBE curriculum is, therefore, way more affordable than the IGCSE curriculum.

When estimating education costs for each level of education regardless of the system, it is good to include hidden costs that are easy to ignore such as:

  • Transport
  • Educational apps
  • Internet bundles
  • Tuition/coaching
  • School trips
  • Fundraisers
  • Sports programs
  • Graduation ceremonies

Raising Money for Covering Education Costs

Raising money to cover lifetime education costs requires a very conscious effort with a lot of dedication.

The standard bank accounts may not beat education inflation.

It is, therefore, important to choose a plan that checks inflation, gives savings returns, and guarantees the education continues even if the provider is no longer able to fund it.

This is where education insurance policies such as Boresha Elimu and Msingi Poa fit so well.
